Is Tea Hydrating or Dehydrating?

Water, water, water. More water. Are you having trouble staying hydrated? Are you looking for something else to hydrate you besides water? Or maybe you already drink tons of tea, and you’re wondering… Is tea good for hydration? Tea isn't dehydrating, is it??

Short answer: Yes! Tea is hydrating.

So if you’re looking for a way to replenish liquids or stay on top of your hydration, you can consider drinking tea!

Well is ALL Tea Hydrating? Are Green Tea and Black Tea DEhydrating?

There's a common idea out there that caffeine is dehydrating. We were wondering too, so we looked it up! Turns out it's a myth. Tthe current body of science says ALL tea is hydrating, even caffeinated tea.

Caffeine can be a mild diuretic, meaning it increases your pee production. But studies show that that’s generally only happening when consumed in large quantities, or when someone’s not used to caffeine.

Mostly you’re peeing more because of all that liquid you drank! In fact, caffeinated drinks offer the same hydration quality as water.

So green tea is hydrating, black tea is hydrating, iced tea is dehydrating… Basically, every cup of tea you drink counts like water toward your daily liquid intake. So if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to work on your hydration, tea just might be the thing to help.

Tea has lots of health benefits, but if you're drinking multiple cups a day, we do recommend mixing it up and not overdoing it on any one kind of tea. Different kinds of tea offer a range of different health benefits!
